Payroll tax - Payroll tax generally refers to a tax which employers are required to withhold from employees' paychecks. In the United States, employers are required to withhold federal income tax, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax. Luxury tax (sports) - A luxury tax in the sports sense is a surcharge put on the aggregate payroll of a team to the extent to which it exceeds a predetermined guideline level set by the league. The ostensible purpose of this "tax" is to prevent teams in major markets with high incomes from signing almost all of the more talented players and hence destroying the competitve balance necessary for a sport to maintain fan interest. Earned income tax credit - The United States federal earned income tax credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit that reduces or eliminates the taxes that low-income working people pay (such as payroll taxes) and also frequently operates as a wage subsidy for low-income workers. Enacted in 1975, the then very small EITC was expanded in 1986, 1990, 1993, and 2001. United States Federal Income Tax Dependent Deduction - A personal exemption amount for each of the taxpayer, their spouse, and their child or dependent for purposes of calculating one's federal income tax was instituted in the 1950s.

Historically, the nobility were supported by taxes on the rich. Others (e.g. libertarians) argue that most or all forms of taxes are immoral due to their involuntary (and therefore eventually coercive/violent) nature. Since governments also resolve commercial disputes, especially in countries with common law, this doctrine is often used to justify a sales tax or value added tax. Some economic theorists consider the concept to be intellectually dishonest since in reality money is fungible. Taxes may be paid in cash or kind (although payments in kind may not always be allowed or classified as taxes in all systems).
